All Known DVD Protections
DVD protection refers to the encryption techniques and many methods used in DVD releases to prevent the viewer or reproduction of DVD content for copyright reasons.
All the DVD protections we know currently are almost as follows:
*CSS (Content Scramble System): A form of copy protection with the DVD encrypted using a key only included in the firmware of "authorized" players. Copies will not be playable since they will be missing the key, which is not writable on DVD-R or DVD-RW discs.
*CPRM/CPPM (Content Protection for Recordable Media and Pre-Recorded Media): A mechanism for controlling the copying, moving and deletion of digital media on a host device, such as a personal computer, or other digital player.
*RC (Region Code): A digital rights management technique designed to allow film studios to control aspects of a release, including content, release date, and price, according to the region.
*RCE (Region Code Enhanced): A scheme deployed on a handful of DVD discs to prevent the playing of region 1 discs in another region, even if the disc was played in a region free player.
*UOP (the User Operation Prohibition): A form of use restriction used on video DVD discs for copyright notices or warnings, such as FBI warnings and "protected" commercials. Most DVD players prohibit the viewer from performing a large majority of actions during sections of a DVD that are protected or restricted by UOP.
*ARccOS (Advanced Regional Copy Control Operating Solution): A copy-protection system made by Sony that is used on some DVDs, and designed as an additional layer to be used in conjunction with CSS.
*RipGuard: A form of content protection introduced by Macrovision, designed to prevent or reduce digital DVD copying by altering the format of the DVD content to disrupt the ripping software.
*APS(Analog Protection System): Also known as Copyguard, a DVD copy prevention system originally developed by Macrovision. Copies of DVDs protected by APS will become garbled and unwatchable.
All Known Blu-ray Protections
Blu-ray protections including Blu-ray copy protections and region code are technologies used on Blu-ray releases to protect them from unauthorized viewing or copy.
Following are almost all Blu-ray protections we know in the current:
*AACS (Advanced Access Content System): A stand for content distribution and digital rights management, used as the access restriction scheme for HD DVD and Blu-ray disc to restrict access and copy.
*BD+: A component of the Blu-ray Disc Digital Rights Management system, intending to prevent unauthorized copy of Blu-ray discs and the playback of Blu-ray media by unauthorized devices.
*RC (Region Code): A digital rights management technique designed to allow film studios to control aspects of a release, including content, release date, and price, according to the region.
*BD-Live: A new technology for Blu-ray that uses internet to extend movie viewing experience with online chat, trivia game, exclusive downloadable content, and other online bonus. It requires that the Blu-ray player must support BD-Live. And the playback of the copy of disc with this protection always fails.
*UOP (the User Operation Prohibition): A form of use restriction used on Blu-ray/DVD discs for copyright notices or warnings, such as FBI warnings in the United States and "protected" commercials which can't be skipped.
